Here's the latest on the research paper:

On Friday, Sept. 26, we will finish revising the rough draft to make a final copy using the laptops in class.  The final paper is due Monday, Sept. 29 at the beginning of class.  NO Late papers will be accepted.

Tuesday, Sept. 2:

EQ: How do journaling and annotating help readers to understand what they read?

Standard:  ELAWLR1:  Comprehension Strategies

Activities:

1. Answer EQ in Journal
2. Read pp. 1-5 of textbook as a large group in class
3. Students will choose a group:
   1. Journaling (read pp.5-6)
   2. Annotating (read pp.6-9)
4. Read your chosen section
5. Share your findings with your group
6. Select an article that interests you and your group
7. Using craft paper, model the above method (journaling or annotating) using the chosen article.
8. Post articles around room, and groups will walk room and share findings
9. Answer EQ in Journal

Wednesday, Sept. 3

EQ: What are the benefits and drawbacks of outlining, summarizing and questioning?

Standard:  ELAWLR1:  Comprehension Strategies

Activities

1. Students will choose a group:

1. Outlining (pp.9-11)
2. Summarizing (pp. 11-12)
3. Questioning (pp.12-14)

2. Read your chosen section
3. Share your findings with your group
4. Using yesterday’s article, model the above method (journaling or annotating) using the chosen article.
5. Post articles around room, and groups will walk room and share findings
6. Answer EQ in Journal.

Thursday, Sept. 4:

EQ: How does a reader analyze what he or she reads?

Standard:  ELAWLR1:  Comprehension Strategies

Activities:

1. Warm-up: The House Activity
2. Reading Analyzation (whole group) pp.14-21
3. Break into “thinking caps” groups and analyze given article
4. Create analysis list of questions that come to mind for each.
5. Answer EQ at bottom of lists.

Friday, Sept. 5:

EQ: How do writers create strong works?

Standard:  ELA12W2: Genre Writing

Activities:

1. Warm-up: Can You Read This?
2. Read and discuss pp. 21-22 of text
3. Break into teams:
   1. Brainstorming (pp. 22-23)
   2. Freewriting (pp.23-24)
   3. Ballooning (p.24)
4. Pairs discuss what each strategy entails and teaches rest of class (jigsawing)
5. Move to “fishbowl” and choose topic/strategies as rest of class observes
6. Class discusses findings
7. Answer EQ in journal

Mrs. Lopez's Biography

Leslie Lopez is an inclusion teacher in the special education department.  She has 17 years of experience working with students with a variety of behavioral and intellectual disabilities, as well as learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism.  She attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina where she was conferred a Bachelor of Arts degree in special education.  She went on to teach in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the southeast, most recently having taught for 7 years in Forsyth County at South Forsyth High School.  She came to pope in 2006 and has been serving as an inclusion teacher in the English and Foreign Language Departments.  She lives in Woodstock with her husband, her 4 year old daughter Hannah, and her 9 month old son Blair.

Ms. Kidd's Biography

Carolyn Kidd joined the Pope High School staff as a paraprofessional in Oct. 2007. 

After graduating from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Kidd taught French and English in Tyner, TN. Kidd was a staff member at Howard North for 5 years.  Kidd served as a substitute for ten years for Cobb County School District.

Kidd has two sons.  Each graduated from Walton High School.  Kidd lives in East Cobb with her husband.  Her hobbies include reading, swimming and dancing.

Mr. Canter's Biography

Chris Canter is a 1995 graduate of Wheeler High School.  He attended the University of Georgia, later transferring to Georgia State University obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

During college, Canter worked as a desk assistant at the ABC News Bureau in Atlanta, simultaneously interning at WSB-TV in midtown. He stayed with both agencies (becoming a writer for WSB's news shows) until August 2000, when he landed his first on-air position at a TV station in Lubbock, Texas.

After a year, Canter moved to Medford, Oregon to gain more experience anchoring local news. He worked for several news agencies throughout the state while he obtained his Master of Arts in Teaching from Concordia University.

Canter spent a year in Gwinnett County teaching Language Arts and Journalism.  The newspaper he advised at his high school won first place in the state of Georgia.

Canter came to Pope in 2006. He teaches English and Journalism. Canter also coaches the Junior Varsity cheerleading teams. Canter lives in East Cobb with his two beautiful children, his Dalmatians, Duke and Dutch.
