We have been busy!

Over the last few weeks we have participated in some very exciting events. Our trip to the Aquarium was great. We had 3 Oceanography students join us as we moved around the exhibits. Chaz, Chandler and Deven were great helpers, assisting with Phillip's wheelchair, getting lunches and just being wonderful role models for our students.

This past Friday we went to USPlay to bowl...a wonderful leisure activity that all our students seem to love. We joined up with Mrs. Gernstein/Ms. Beasley's class, Mrs. Zentner's class and a class from Sprayberry  H.S. to have a great time. Some of our students bowled with other classes and had a terrific opportunity to socialize. I hope you all had a chance to look at the pictures we sent home in your student's folders.

I want to wish all your families a wonderful Thanksgiving from Katie and myself.

Homecoming Week

This week is Homecoming weeek at Pope. There are a number of activities planned for the students, mostly in the evening. I am sending home a list in their folders. Students do have the opportunity to dress up according to the theme for the day. On Friday I believe there will be a pep rally, something all the students enjoy attending.

Last week we enjoyed our lunch with Mr. Beaulieu. It was a great opportunity for us to get to know our new principal and for him to get to know us. We were able to tell him something about ourselves and ask him questions. He brought along Mr. Craft, who is one of our new administrators and so we we were able to get to know him. The pizza was great and so was the conversation. I hope that we will be able to do this again later in the year.

Bones!!

Starting tomorrow, September 16, our class is going to be assisting Ms. Gernstein's and Ms. Beasley's class and Ms. Zentner's in making Bones. Bones are dog treats that the students make, package and sell to raise money to donate to animal shelters. We are excited about this new venture and look forward to working with all the students. We hope to add them to the inventory in the school store which we man each Monday and Wednesday at lunch. If you have a dog or know of any other deserving dog, you may consider buying them a treat. Each bag is $1.00.

Welcome to our new site

Hello everyone and welcome back for a new school year. We have spent the first few wweeks of school getting back into our routines and getting used to some changes in the class. We have a new student (Christine), a new speech teacher (Mrs. Holland)and a new parapro (Ms.Katie).  All of these changes seem to be very positive and we are ready to move forward.

Next Friday will be our first pep rally. It is always very exciting for the students to attend these. If you ever wish to attend a Pope football game, I can send you a copy of the schedule. It would be a great experience for your student.

I hope to update this blog every few week with the news of the class, so be sure to check back occasionally.

Just an Update

I want to let you know how much fun our students had at the dance at Kennesaw Mountain last Monday. They very much enjoyed the music and the opportunity to see former teachers and students from their past. It was very hard to convince some iwas time to leave. Please keep in mind that we are going to be hosting our own dance for Special Needs students on Friday, April 18 here at Pope. We hope that you will take the opportunity to drop off your student so they can enjoy a few hours of fun and dancing. They will be well chaperoned and it is very exciting for them to have an evening out without Mom or Dad.

I also want to remind you that Tuesday, March 4, is an Early Release Day. The busses will be picking up your student from school at approximately 1 pm on that day to take them home.

Feb. 4

This week we will be using the events of Mardi Gras and Chinese New Year for the basis of much of our work. On CBI we are going to Party City to check identify decorations that would be appropriate of each of those special events as well as Valentine's Day. We will practice identification, matching, add-a-dollar and mobility skills.

I would like to make you are of a  resource for  transition services that you may find very valuable. If you go to the Pope High School website and click on Departments and then Special Education, you will find a link to the Cobb County Parent Mentors website. On that site there is information about waivers and other services you might be able to use.

Welcome to the new site.

Welcome to our new blog. I plan to use this to keep you informed about events in our classroom as the year goes on.

There are two very exciting events coming up for our students. The first is the annual dance at Kennesaw Mountain put on by the Adapted P.E. department on Feb. 25. kThe second is the Spring Fling on April 18. This is an evening dance held at Pope for all MOID and MID students that attend a Cobb County high school. We will be providing more information as we get closer to them.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or contact either by phone or e-mail.
