WH 101: IMPORTANT NOTICE

TEST CORRECTIONS:  TOMORROW, APRIL 22, @ 7:45-8:15 A.M. or 3:30-4:00 P.M. IN ROOM 202

We have begun a new unit on Imperialism 1870-1914.  The primary areas that will be studied are Africa, Asia, and Latin America.  This is a very important unit as IMPERIALISM will be one of the major underlying causes of World War

In closing our study on African imperialism, the students created their own political cartoon which portrayed the topics of Imperialism and Social Darwinism.  The majority of the students produced/presented amazing, thought-provoking cartoons.

IMPERIALISM TEST - Friday, April 24  Students will receive a study guide and world map on Wednesday that will help them in studying for the test.

WH 101: ENTERING THE FINAL SIX WEEKS

Welcome back from Spring Break!  I hope everyone is ready to get down to work on our remaining units in World History.

Tomorrow, April 15, students will test over the Industrial, Social, and Cultural Revolution + the Unification of Italy and Germany.  Students received a study guide on Monday, as well as reviewing in class today.

Our next unit will be on Imperialism.  Seven major European countries are going to decide that they are going to take territory in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.  The students have come to understand that LAND = POWER; therefore, they should have not difficulty understanding the mission of these countries, and the problems that are going to arise in these foreign areas.  This is an extremely important unit for the students as imperialism will be one of the leading causes of World War I which just happens to be our next unit of study.

In this final six weeks, students need to stay focused and continue to complete their class/home work.

WORLD HISTORY 101: THE FRENCH REVOLUTION & NAPOLEON

The students worked diligently for the past three days on their Absolute Monarch assessments.  Now, it's onward to the French Revolution and Napoleon.  To start off with, we will take a look at the factors that need to be present in a country for a revolution to take place.  After that, we will discuss the causes, major events/people connected with the revolution, and it's results.  The French people have been able to dismiss the bonds of an absolute monarch, but jump right back into the fire when Napoleon Bonaparte comes to power.  According to Napoleon, he didn't have to play by the rules!

Can you identify the following people from this time period?

World History 101: Absolute Monarchs

This past Friday students tested over the Renaissance, Reformation, Exploration, and the Scientific Revolution.  The written portion of this test had students identifying various paintings, sculptures, and architecture from the Renaissance period.  The majority of the students did quite well on identifying these pieces of art.

On Monday, 3/16, we started yet another new unit.  After being introduced to many of the great thinkers of the Enlightenment, the students began work on an alternative assessment on Absolute Monarchs and the important events that took place during their reign.  Each student received a page of instruction on how their completed chart should look.  The students will be working over the next 3 days on this assessment.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, they will have the opportunity to use the laptop computer cart during class; however, some students may need to use some extra time at home to ensure a quality assessment will be turned in on Thursday.

On Friday, we move on to the French Revolution and Napoleon.

We are now over half way through Spring Semester.  Once again, let me urge you to see that your student is studying World History on a nightly basis.  We are moving into the part of history where there are going to be a lot of Henry's, Louis's, and Charles's; where they ruled; what wars they fought, and treaties that were signed.  By studying nightly, the students keep this info. in front of them so when it comes time for a major unit test, they students are not overwhelmed by the amount of information on the study guide.

WORLD HISTORY 101: The Renaissance, Reformation, and Exploration

This week the class has begun their study of the above topics.  The students viewed a video in which they took a walking tour of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.  Our study of this period has offered students the opportunity to view many of the wonderful paintings, sculptures, architectural designs, etc. that developed during this period in Italy.  Click on the link below to view the powerpoint presentation in order to review the items we have talked about in class:

World History 101: European Middle Ages

After a brief look at the "New Rome", the Byzantine Empire in the East, we have now moved on to our study of the Middle Ages or medieval period.  Our major topics of study will be: feudalism, manorialism; feudal monarchies, the power of the medieval church (includes the study of the major Crusades), and the growth of towns and cities.  Although our class is centered around the teaching of the Georgia Performance Standards in World History, I feel that I would be slighting the students in their study of this period if we did not spend some time studying the Hundred Years' War (actually lasted longer than 100 years!), the Wars of Roses, and two events that would lead to the temporary decline of the Church, the Babylonian Captivity and Great Schism.

The reading assignments for this unit are found in Chapter 13 and 14:

Feudal Monarchies: pp.353-357; Feudalism/Manoralism: 358-363; Knighthood/Code of Chivalry: 364-367; the Medieval Church: 370-373

Chap. 14  The Crusades: pp.379-385; early monarchies of England/France: 393-397; the Hundred Years' War/the plague: 398-403.

Throughout this unit, the students will have a variety of assignments:  Document Packets where students will analyze primary/secondary sources of the period; charting the Crusades; and, a mini-project designing their own coat of arms.

As always, students need to continue to study their class notes nightly, keep up with reading assignments, and complete all class/home work.
