I am very enthusiastic about my first period Honor's American History class. It only has 23 students and I normally average 30-32 students in my honor's classes. They also seem to be a very brignt group and I have high expectations for their success in the class. I graduated from the University of Georga and have a Master's Degree from Georgia State. My 25 year teaching experience includes 8 years at Pope and 11 years out of state in Texas and New Jersey. We will have an EOCT state exam TWO weeks before the end of the semester so the curriculum has to be taught at a very brisk pace. My class scores have always been very high and I anticipate this class to do as well. We just had a unit test on Civil War, Reconstruction and the West. I just finished grading their discussion questions and put their grades on line. This was their best test as a group and I am very plased. They presented their "lifestyles of the rich and famous" project on Friday and today. We are having a quiz on idustrialization tomorrow. We are doing a few graphic oganizers overview notes to cover immigrants, labor unions, and the Populist Party this week. We will have another quiz this week. There will not be a unit test on this material. I am just trying to cover key points of the standards in order to cover as much information as possible for the GHST exam on Thursday March 26th. The EOCT is also the first week in May.

Candace Johnson's Sociology Classes

I cannot tell you how excited I am about my two Sociology classes this semester!  Even though there are 32 students in each class, they have been fantastic and creative with our first class project.  We have been working on "Creating their class learning enviornment".  My room is now painted a warm green, we have a "chalk wall" for daily essential questions and their own inspiring quotes.  Our mission statement which is "Kindness spreads like fire, so be the one to ignite the flame" is visible for all who pass the class. One committee had created a t shirt for each class. We now have a fake window,have a birthday chart and our first positive impact awards were given Monday Jan 26th. The class just finished a group project on how fairy tales are used to socialize young children. Their presentation was a skit about their fairy tale and I really enjoyed them. Hopefully, they will be graded by the end of the week and I will put them on Pinnacle. We had a major unit test on Conformity and Social Order and another portfolio grade. The grades on the test were good overall but should be higher beause it is basic vocabualary and examples. I was very disappointed in some of the portfolio grades as many students just did not put the effort into completing class assignments and keeping them in order. Our new unit is on what factors cause socialization. We should have another unit test next week. We have two optional projects. The song lyric presentation and a personal web project that is due March 23rd. If they are just finishing their work and participating, there is no reason to have a low grade in this class. I have taught for over 25 yrs. in Texas, NJ, and Ga. This is my 8th year at Pope.  I graduated from UGA and have my Master's from Geeorgia State University.
